Ariosto, Lodovico (1474-1533) Courtier to the Este family. Poet and dramatist whose works included Orlando Furioso and I Suppositi.

Bembo, Pietro (1470-1547) Poet, literary theorist and humanist. One of Pope Leo X's secretaries. Despite being a member of the Pope's inner circle, he has never received the Cardinal's appointment which he desires.

de Grassi, Paris (1470-1528) aka de Grassis. Bishop of Pesaro. Master of Ceremonies to Popes Julius II and Leo X. Brother of Cardinal Achille de Grassi.

Bibbiena, Cardinal (1470-1520) Born Bernado Dovizi. Medici protege. Humanist, diplomat and playwright of "La Calandria", in which the figure of girl-in-boy's-clothes was introduced to the stage. Instrumental in Leo de' Medici's selection as Pope Leo X. Treasurer General. Also serves as unofficial "Maitre de Plaisir" at the Pope's parties.

Giovio, Paolo (1483-1552) Courtier, historian and doctor.

Pasquino The original, and still best known, of Rome's talking statues.

Raphael (1483-1520) Pope Leo X's favourite artist. In charge of the decoration of the Stanze in the Vatican Palace. Appointed architect of St Peter's following the death of Bramante in 1514. Intensely disliked by Michaelangelo.

Rovasenda, Cardinal Secretary of the Collegio Romano

Sadoleto, Cardinal Jacopo (1477-1547) Humanist and outstanding Latin stylist. One of Pope Leo's secretaries.

Sannazaro (1457-1530) Pastoral poet, author of Arcadia.

Trissino, Gian Giorgio (1478-1550) Poet and orthographic reformist. Proponent of the "Italian" language, rather than Dante's "Tuscan".

Vida, Marco Girolamo (1485-1566) Bishop. Neo-latin poet.
